Biography

Lionel Stanley Walters was born in Rupanyup, Victoria, was single and a farmer living at 1304 Dana Street, Ballarat, Victoria when he enlisted with the Machine Gun Company 2, Reinforcement 2 on 31 March 1916 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 4 May 1916. Whilst in France he was accidentally wounded with a gunshot wound to the right wrist. A court of inquiry found no fault rested with Walters and no charged were filed. He returned home to Australia on 18 October 1917.

He had two brothers who also served: Pte Percival William Walters, 14th Bn, returned to Australia, 18 October 1917 (Tree No. 244) and Driver Theophilus Thomas Walters, Divisional Ammunition Column, returned to Australia, 29 August 1915 (Tree No. 534)
