William Henry Wellwood (SN 535) born in Melbourne, was a 29 year old grocer when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 8th 1914. On October 19th he embarked aboard he Wiltshire for service with the 4th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli. On July 30th 1915 he suffered a bullet wound to his nose and left ear that caused his evacuation and then his return to Australia. He returned aboard the Beltana and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on February 14th 1916. On September 16th 1917 he died of tuberculosis attributed to his military service.
