Alfred Harris (SN 1924) born in Ballarat, was a single 30 year old labourer at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne on April 1st 1916. He embarked from Melbourne, aboard the Medic on May 20th 1916. While serving in France with the 46th Infantry Battalion he suffered a gunshot wound to his leg on July 10th 1917. That effectively ended his service, as two months later he was found guilty of deserting His Majesty’s service and sentenced to ten years penal servitude. He served two years of this sentence before the remainder was remitted. He returned to Australia aboard the Orita, disembarked at Melbourne on August 6th 1919 and was discharged on September 21st.
