Born in Ballarat, Francis William Lythgo was a single 18 year old engineer at the time of his enlistment on the 4th of April 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on the 27th of May 1916.
On the 22nd of October 1918, Francis was awarded the Military Medal.
He returned to Australia on the 30th of April 1919 and was discharged on the 7th of June 1919 as medically unfit, his debility not being stated.
