Biography

Leonard Charles Johnson (SN 7102) born at Ballarat, was a 42 year old jockey when he enlisted in Ballarat on April 3rd 1916. On November 23rd he embarked aboard the Hororata to serve with the 6th Infantry Battalion. He came ashore in France in May 1917 and managed to serve through the war without suffering significant harm. He returned home aboard the Norman, disembarked on August 8th 1919 and was discharged on September 25th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Charles L. Johnson.
