Born in Ballarat, Leonard Charles Johnson was a single 42 year old jockey at the time of his enlistment on the 20th of March 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 23rd of November 1916.
He returned to Australia on the 18th of August 1919 and was discharged on the 25th of September 1919.
