Clifford Edgar Garrard (Lt.) was born in Kingston and educated at Urquhart Street State School and the Ballarat School of Mines. At the time of his enlistment on January 8th 1916 he was a 31 year old assayer, married to Lily. He left Australia in November on board the Ascanius to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion, rising to the rank of lieutenant. After further training in England he proceeded to France. He was killed in action on August 31st 1918 and is buried in Hem Farm Military Cemetery, France. He was 34 years of age.
