Frank Phillips was born in Linton, VIC and was a Labourer living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, C Company on 5 April 1916 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. On 27 October 1916 he was admitted to hospital, sick, receiving furlough to Perham Downs until early February when he marched from Army Headquarters and retuning home to Australia from Plymouth aboard the H.T. Binalla. He received a medical discharge on 17 June 1917.
