George Edwin Welsh (SN 6112) born in Ballarat, was a 26 year old cook when he enlisted in Mildura on April 11th 1916. On July 28th he embarked aboard the Themistocles and sailed to England. He crossed to France in March 1917 to serve with the 8th Infantry Battalion. On October 4th 1917 he was wounded in action in Belgium when he sustained a severe gunshot wound to his left leg which ultimately led to his return to Australia. He returned home on the Somali, disembarked at Melbourne on February 8th 1919 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on March 18th.
