Biography

Gilbert Josiah Chigwidden (SN 3772) was born in South Australia and was a married 31 year old motor driver when he enlisted in Melbourne on April 11th 1916. He embarked from Sydney on September 19th aboard the Commonwealth and reached England in November. On December 17th 1916 he joined the 29th Battalion in France. He came through the war without major wounds or illness and returned to Australia aboard the Port Lyttleton reaching Melbourne on August 5th 1919. He was discharged on September 25th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Gilbert J. Chegwidden.
