Biography

Ellis Claud Harvey Dawber was born in Geelong and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 13 April 1916 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 July 1916. In November 1916 he arrived in France to serve with the 8th Battalion. On April 16th 1917 he was wounded in action, suffering a severe shell wound to his left arm which was subsequently amputated. His war was over and he was repatriated to Australia in October 1917.
