James Leslie Veal was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a storeman when he enlisted with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, Military District 3 and Military District 6 on 2 September 1914 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board TRANSPORT A2 Geelong on 17 September 1914. However, upon arriving in Egypt he was diagnosed suffering from chronic bronchitis and was immediately returned to Australia as medially unfit.
