Biography

Joseph Bolitho (SN 1801) was born at Broomfield and was a 25 year old labourer when he enlisted on April 25th 1916, the first Anzac Day. He trained with the 14th Depot Battalion in Ballarat before embarking on the Orontes on August 16th. He joined the 39th Battalion in France in November but after just 5 days, illness forced his evacuation to hospital in England. He rejoined his unit in France in February 1917 but on May 29th he was killed in action near Ploegsteert Wood. He is buried in Strand Military Cemetery. He was 27 years of age.
