Ernest Alfred Davis (SN 1813) born in Ballarat, was a 25 year old labourer, married to Ivy, when he enlisted on May 4th 1916. He embarked aboard the Orontes on August 16th and joined the 39th Battalion in France in November. On June 7th 1917 he was wounded in action suffering a gunshot wound to his right leg and evacuated to hospital in England. Once recovered, in October he was transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion and returned to France in April 1918. In May he was again wounded in action, gassed, and evacuated to hospital, returning to France just two weeks before hostilities ceased. He returned to Australia on the Rio Pardo disembarking in Adelaide on July 17th 1919. He was discharged in Melbourne on October 20th 1919.
