Biography

John Reid Taylor (SN 284) was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but enlisted in Ballarat on September 2nd 1914. A labourer, 30 years old, and married to Mary, he joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne on board the Benallain October. In May 1915 he was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major but his service at Gallipoli was terminated in November when appendicitis caused his evacuation, first to Lemnos and then to Malta. He reached France in April 1916 and was killed in action near Menin Road on September 20th 1917. With no known grave, his name is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
