Biography

Arthur Harold Sansum (SN 5037) was born in Ballarat East and educated at Humffray Street State School and Grenville College. The 26 year old, unmarried clerk enlisted in Western Australia on November 5th 1915. Allotted to the 16th Infantry Battalion, he was promoted to Corporal then Sergeant in quick succession before embarking from Fremantle in late March 1916 on board the Shropshire. He arrived in France in June where he reverted to the rank of Private on joining the 48th Battalion. On August 14th 1916 he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, and is buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Contalmaison, France.
