Biography

John Albert Russ was born in Ballarat East, Victoria, was married to Mrs Maude Russ of 23 Glaybrook Street, Ballarat East and was a Labourer when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 26 April 1916 at the age of 34. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 July 1916. He proceeded overseas to France from England on 22 October 1916 and the very next day was fined 7 days' pay for refusing to obey an order given by a senior officer. On 31 December 1917 he marched in to No. 5 Camp, Sutton Way where he remained until marching out to the 2nd Training battalion in Godford on 15 January 1919. He returned home to Australia aboard the Hospital Transport Oroa, disembarking at Melbourne on 7 April 1919.
