Biography

Stephen William Bayly (SN 1822) was an 18 year old gas mechanic from Ripon Street Ballarat South when he signed to join the AIF on February 29th 1916. He trained with an engineer unit at Seymour before sailing from Melbourne on the Themistocles on July 28th. He spent time in England attached to the 15th Training Battalion before being deployed to France with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion in September 1917. On March 22nd 1918 he was wounded in action when he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was evacuated to the 1st Birmingham War Hospital in England but returned to his unit in France in August 1918 and served out the war. He returned safely to Australia where he died on January 20th 1975 at the age of 76.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Steve Bayly.
