Biography

Edward Humphrey (SN 6040) born in Ballarat, was a married 41year old saw mill hand at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on April 28th 1916. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne on board the Themistocles in July. On arrival in England he was transferred to the 39th Battalion and crossed to France in November. Aside from some minor health issues he came through the war without harm but, soon after hostilities ceased, he was diagnosed with ‘valvular disease of the heart’. He returned to Australia aboard the Ascanius, disembarking at Melbourne in April 1919. He was discharged from the AIF on May 11th 1919.
