Robert Law Lineker was born in Ballarat and was a Master Tailor by trade when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, 15th Reinforcement as a Lieutenant on 1 August 1916 at the age of 31. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25 September 1916.
On May 17th 1917 he reached France and served there with the 28th Battalion till the war's end. He achieved the rank of Captain and was fortunate to avoid major injury or illness, his only problem having been some synovitis in the right elbow.
