Biography

James Henry Alexander McKenzie was born in Melbourne and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 8th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 2 May 1916 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 July 1916 and marched in to the 2nd Training Battalion in England. In January 1917 he joined the 8th Battalion in France. Apart from a couple of short illness periods in hospital, he came through the war without significant physical injury or illness. He returned to Australia on the Port Darwin, disembarking at Melbourne on July 27th 1919.
