Biography

Leonard Cooper (SN 6640) was born in Carlton and enlisted from Hopetoun on May 9th 1916. He was 27 years old, single and working as a labourer at that time. He embarked from Melbourne on board the Nestor in October to serve with the 8th Infantry Battalion. After a period training in England during which he spent some time in hospital, he was posted to France with the 8th Battalion in April 1917. He was killed in action during the fighting at Broodseinde Ridge in Belgium on October 4th 1917. He has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing, Ypres, Belgium.
