Biography

Cecil Howard Carter (SN 414) was born in Wales, UK, but was a 21-year-old farm labourer when he enlisted on January 25th 1916. He trained with the 14th Depot Battalion at Ballarat before being posted to the 39th Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ascanius on May 27th and reached France in November. On January 7th 1917, at 23 years of age, he was killed in action near Armentieres and was buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery.

His brother Reginald also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
