Henry Albert Deller (SN 1082) born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old blacksmith when he enlisted in Ballarat on September 8th 1914. Allotted to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Benalla on October 19th, first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. In June 1915 he became ill, suffering from influenza and asthma, and was evacuated from Gallipoli and then returned to Australia. He disembarked from the Hororata in Melbourne on August 25th 1915 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on April 17th 1916.
