Albert Edward McMillan was born in Ballarat East and was already a Soldier when he enlisted in the 10th Field Company Engineers as a Sapper on 8 May 1916 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 June 1916.
In November 1916 he crossed to France and, aside from a couple of episodes of minor illness, he served safely through the war. He returned home on the Barambah and disembarked at Melbourne on October 25th 1919.
