Biography

John Gluyas was born in Ballarat and was a Miner by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Reinforcements on 11th may 1917 at the age of 44. Hus unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 14 June 1917. Upon arrival in England he was based at the 11th Training Battalion at Larkhill, destined to go no further. Ill health led to several health assessments until a Medical Board finally found him to be æpermanently unfit for general duties and permanently unfit for home service'. Consequently he was returned to Australia, on the Dunvegan Castle as far as Durban in South Africa and then the Field Marshal to Melbourne. He was discharged as æmedically unfit – bronchitis'.
