Percival James Boyd (SN 2040) was a 21 year old blacksmith from Errard Street Ballarat when he enlisted on May 16th 1916. On September 25th he embarked on the Shropshire to serve in France with the 39th Battalion. In May 1917 he was wounded in action, suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his legs and wrist, and was invalided to England before being returned to Australia on the New Zealand Hospital Ship Pakeha. He reached Melbourne in October 1917 and was discharged a month later.
