Percival James Boyd was born in Waterloo, VIC and was a Blacksmith by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat with the 39th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on 16 May 1916 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25 September 1916. On May 29th 1917 he was wounded in action, suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his legs and wrist. He was invalided to England before being returned to Australia on the New Zealand Hospital Ship Pakeha. He reached Melbourne in October 1917 and was discharged a month later.
