Biography

Edwin Daniel Appleton (SN 28599) born at Ballarat, was a 19 year old bookkeeper when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 17th 1916. On October 25th he embarked aboard the Ulysses and sailed to England. In August 1917 he was moved to France where he served with the 6th Field Artillery Brigade. He avoided battle wounds but was hospitalised in May 1918 suffering from tachycardia. He rejoined his unit two months later and safely saw out the final months of the war. He returned to Australia aboard the Karmala, disembarked at Melbourne on August 17th 1919 and was discharged on September 25th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Edward D. Appleton.
