Fred Bayley Watts (SN 1817) was born in England and was a 19 year old farm hand when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 5th 1915. He embarked in January 1916 aboard the Borda and sailed to Egypt. He served on Lemnos and in Palestine, Syria and Egypt transferring between the 3rd and 4th Anzac Battalions and the 8th Light Horse Regiment. On March 23rd 1918 he suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh which effectively ended his active service. At war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Ajana, disembarked on October 9th 1919 and was discharged on November 3rd.
