Biography

William Harcourt Davies was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 5 on 1 June 1916 at the age of 36. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A10 Karroo on 18 September 1916. In June 1917 he crossed to France to join the 2nd Pioneer Battalion. He was wounded in action on September 15th, suffering a shrapnel wound to the abdomen, and after treatment in France he was evacuated to the 1st Birmingham War Hospital in England. He returned to France in February 1918 and safely saw out the remainder of the war. He returned home on the Chemnitz and disembarked at Melbourne on September 5th 1919.
