Herbert Rolfe was born in Birmingham, England, was married to Mrs Emma Rolfe of 316 Doveton Street, North Ballarat, Victoria and was an Engineer when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on 8 June 1916 at the age of 39. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25 September 1916. In December he was shipped overseas to France aboard the S.S. Princess Victoria. He fell ill with chronic bronchitis and was invalided back to Australia aboard the Themistocles in January 1917, reaching Melbourne later that year and was discharged on 2 August 1917.
