John Davidson (SN 435) born in Ballarat, was a 28 year old boundary rider and shearer when he enlisted in Melbourne on March 1 1916. Posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the <em Ascanius in late May and sailed to England. While training England, he went absent without leave for five weeks which cost him 67 days' pay. Soon after this he was fined 21 days' pay for drunkenness and creating a disturbance in the guard room. A week later he crossed to the battlefields of France. On February 4th 1917 he was wounded action, gassed, and evacuated to hospital in England. Once recovered he returned to France but was wounded a second time when he suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder on September 10 1918. After the war, he was married in England before returning to Australia aboard the Shropshire, disembarking at Melbourne on January 22nd 1920. He was discharged on Anzac Day 1920.
