Joseph Peoples was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on 12 June 1916 at the age of 32. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25 September 1916. On January 26th 1917 he joined the 39th Battalion in France. He was wounded in action on April 30th when he received severe shrapnel wounds to his left arm and left leg. He was evacuated to hospital in England where it was decided he should return home. He returned to Australia on the Ulysses and disembarked at Melbourne on November 13th 1917.
