Biography

Charles Herbert Thomas (SN 10177) born in Ballarat, was a married 32 year old permanent soldier when he enlisted in the AIF in Ballarat on May 8th 1916.He embarked aboard the Runic on June 20th and reached France in December. He served on the Western Front with the 10th then 9th Field Company Engineers and at war’s end was Mentioned in Despatches by General Sir Douglas Haig for his distinguished service. He returned to Australia aboard the Barambah, disembarked at Melbourne on October 25th 1919 and was discharged on December 17th.
