Clifford Herbert (SN 216) born at Melbourne, was a 22 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on September 8th 1914. Assigned to the 14th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Ulysses on December 22nd and sailed to Egypt. He was wounded in action at Gallipoli in May 1915, suffering a shrapnel wound, and was evacuated to hospital. He rejoined his unit in December for the final weeks of the Gallipoli campaign. In March 1916 he was transferred to the 4th Machine Gun Company as a driver, and in June he moved to France. He came safely through the remainder of his service and returned to Australia aboard the Port Lyttleton, disembarked at Melbourne on Christmas Day 1918 and was discharged on February 23rd 1919. He also enlisted to serve durig WW2 with service number V80649.
