Biography

George Manson Campion (SN 6243) was born in Liverpool, UK, but migrated with his family when he was a nine-month-old baby. He grew up in central Ballarat and attended the Dana Street State School before becoming a cordial factory labourer. He was unmarried when he enlisted on June 22nd 1916 at the age of 32. He embarked from Melbourne on September 11th, aboard the Euripides and reached England six weeks later where he was attached to the 8th Battalion. He crossed to France on Christmas Eve 1916 but, only two months later, was killed in action at Bapaume, France, on February 26th 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux.
