Born in Ballarat, James Henry Gilhooley, a tinsmith by trade, enlisted on the 13th of July 1916 at the age of 30. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on the 11th of September 1916.
He was wounded in action on August 10th 1918 with a gunshot wound to his left arm. He was invalided to the U.K on the 28th of August 1918.
James returned to Australia on the 10th of March 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 29th of April 1919. Tree No. 2457
