Biography

Harry Spencer Holgate (SN 4303) was born in Miners Rest but was working as an auctioneer in NSW when he enlisted at Menangle Park in July 1916. 35 years old and unmarried, he embarked from Sydney aboard the Afric in November and joined the 29th Battalion in France in March the next year. In August he was attached to the 8th Machine Gun Company but was killed in action near Zonnebeke, Belgium, on October 11th 1917. He was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for "bravery in the field" and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.

His brother Edward was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
