Harry Spencer Holgate MM (SN 4303) was born in Miners Rest but attended Ballarat College. He was 35 years old and was working as an auctioneer in NSW when he enlisted at Menangle Park on July 4th 1916. He embarked from Sydney aboard the Afric in November and joined the 29th Battalion in France in March 1917. In August he was attached to the 8th Machine Gun Company but was killed in action near Zonnebeke, Belgium, on October 11th 1917. He was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for 'bravery in the field'. Like his brother Edward, he has no known grave. His name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.
His brother Edward was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
