Biography

Auburn Douglas Callow (SN 10) was born in Hawthorn, Victoria, but was living with his parents in Ballarat when, with their consent, he enlisted there on 8th September, 1914. The 18 year old assistant veterinary surgeon embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Light Horse Regiment on board Stor of Victoria. He arrived in Gallipoli in May but was evacuated to hospital in Malta two months later, suffering from influenza and pyrexia. He did not rejoin his unit in Egypt until December, following the evacuation of Gallipoli. While in Egypt, he was promoted to Lance Corporal in January 1916 then Corporal a month later. In June, he was further promoted to Signal Sergeant and served out most of the remainder of the war with the Desert Mounted Corps. In August 1918 he joined the Cadet School, from which he qualified the following February and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, then full Lieutenant in April. Before returning to Australia, he was granted 2 months paid leave "to study English Methods of Farming" at the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society. He returned to Australia on board the Aenaes in November 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 8th February 1920.

His father Andrew and younger brother Nathaniel also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
