George William Johnston was born in Ballarat and was a Tailor by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 14 July 1916 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916. He reached England in November, then, in February 1917 he joined the 8th Battalion in France. His file records that in March 1917 he was reprimanded for æbeing absent from church parade', but aside from this he came through the war without significant physical wounds. He returned to Australia on the Port Darwin, disembarking at Melbourne on July 27th 1919.
