Allan Bryant Smith was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and an Electrician when he enlisted with the 7th Battalion, E Company on 9 September 1914 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A20 Hororata on 19 October 1914. It was first believed that this soldier had a warrant served for desertion. However, upon closer review, a letter to his mother, Mrs. Smith of Ballarat, dated 22 February 1917, refers to some confusion and mistaken identity with a Pte A.C. Smith. A correction was later issued and according to a letter from Base Records dated 17 September 1924, Allan Bryant Smith returned home to Australia on 9 September 1915 and was discharged as medically unfit on 15 may 1917.
No additional records of the other Pte Smith can be found.
