Biography

William John Laherty (SN 6551) was a married, 37 year old butcher in Mt Egerton when he enlisted on July 15th 1916. Born in Ballarat, he was posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in early October 1916 on board the Nestor. Posted to France in February 1917, he was killed in action during the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt on May 9th 1917 and has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
