Albert Coleman (SN 6485) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old salesman when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 20th 1916. He embarked aboard the Nestor on October 2nd , attached to the 8th Infantry Battalion, and reached England in mid-November. In May 1917 he suffered acute appendicitis which saw him hospitalised in England for several weeks. It was not until December of 1917 that he was able to join his unit in France. On August 23rd 1918 he suffered a penetrating chest wound which ended his time on the battlefield. He was returned to Australia on the Karoa disembarking at Melbourne on May 8th 1919 before being discharged on July 6th 1919.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Albert Colman.
