Biography

Thomas Patrick Carroll (SN 6486) from Clayton Street Ballarat, was a 20 year old labourer when he enlisted on August 4th 1916. He trained with the 8th Battalion reinforcements, and early in his military career he was fined five shillings for overstaying his leave. He embarked on the Nestor on October 2nd 1916, reaching Plymouth England on November 16th. In early February 1917 he joined the 8th Battalion in France, but within a week he was wounded in action. He suffered a mild gunshot wound to the face but was able to return to duty a month later. On August 25th 1918 he was wounded for a second time when he suffered severe gas poisoning and was admitted to hospital in France. After the war he returned home on the Orontes, disembarking at Melbourne on May 24th 1919. He died in March 1944 at the age of 47.
