Biography

Sidney Edwin Eyres (SN 3747) born in Ballarat, was a 36 year old orchardist when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 21st 1915. Allotted to the 14th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ceramic on November 23rd and reached France in June 1916. In August he suffered gunshot wounds to right hand and knee and was evacuated to hospital in England. He was able to rejoin his unit in France in February 1917 but on April 11th he was reported missing. It was subsequently found that he had been captured at Reincourt and was now a prisoner of war at Dulmen in Germany. After the signing of the Armistice, he was quickly repatriated to England, arriving there on December 9th 1918. He was returned to Australia on the Lancashire, disembarked at Melbourne on March 31st 1919 and was discharged May 23rd. Sidney is remembered on the ex-Prisoners of War Memorial in Ballarat.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Sydney E. Eyres.
