Biography

Richard Brain (SN 6469) born in Ballarat, was a married 36 year old cook when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 9th1916. He embarked aboard the Nestor on October 2nd to serve with the 8th Infantry Battalion. An extended illness marked the start of his service but in May 1917 he arrived at the Western Front. He avoided battle wounds but in December 1917 he accidently fractured his right ankle, and it was decided he was no longer fit for active service. He returned to Australia aboard the Borda, disembarked at Melbourne on May 30th1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on July 9th.
