Biography

Robert Alexander Quanchie (SN 6328) born in Ballarat, was a 23 year old grocer, married to Annie, when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 22nd 1916. He embarked aboard the Euripides on September 11th and during the voyage was fined a day’s pay for using obscene language. He joined the 8th Battalion in France on Christmas Eve 1916. He avoided major illness or injury during his service and enjoyed some leave in Paris while awaiting his return to Australia. He returned home aboard the Prinz Ludwig, disembarked at Melbourne on September 5th 1919 and was discharged on October 20th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Robert Quanchi.
