Biography

Henry Garbett (SN 6495) born in Ballarat, was a 42 year old miner when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 22nd 1916. He embarked aboard the Nestor on October 2nd for service with the 6th Infantry Battalion. In early 1917 he was sentenced to a period in detention for having been absent without leave. In April 1917 he moved to France but while he avoided battle wounds, he developed trench fever and a persistent cough and was evacuated to England. While undergoing treatment he was charged with ‘using foulest language in front of a sister’. He was assessed as unfit for further active service and was returned to Australia on the Suevic and was discharged ‘medically unfit, miner’s phthisis’.
