James William Stephenson (SN 2662) was born at Newcastle NSW and was a 39 year old mine manager at Sebastopol, married with three children, when he enlisted on September 1st 1916. Assigned to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion he embarked aboard the Port Melbourne on October 21st and sailed to England. He saw action in France but came through his service without major injury or incident, being promoted to sergeant in July 1918. He returned to Australia aboard the Main and disembarked on October 11th 1919. He was discharged on November 25th 1919.
