Biography

Spencer William Terry was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 6th Battalion, 23rd Reinforcement on 12 September 1916 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 23 November 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth, England, on January 29th 1917. The English winter caused him to be admitted to hospital in February, suffering from bronchitis. In April he was transferred to the 66th Battalion then in August 1917 he was moved to France as a reinforcement for the 38th Battalion. In October he became ill and in November he was evacuated to the Liverpool Military Hospital suffering from myalgia. He was then returned to Australia on the Euripides, disembarking at Melbourne on March 21st 1918. He was subsequently discharged as æmedically unfit – mania'.
