Biography

John Stevens was born in Ballarat and was a Boot Pressman by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 12 September 1916 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916. In July 1917 he was posted to the 4th Light Trench Mortar Battery in Belgium. In early August he was reported as having received an unspecified accidental wound, then on September 26th, a year to the day after he enlisted, he was wounded in action, suffering a shrapnel wound to the face. After the war he returned home on the Militiades and disembarked at Melbourne on August 5th 1919.
